It’s not even mid February yet and the weather is so mild here in the burbs of Vancouver. My yard is in dire need of some maintenance! I know Keith is moaning at the thought of all the yard work. He literally is! I’m seeing little green buds on my trees and shrubs. My huge rhododendron, has big flower buds, all over it and they look like they’re ready to burst. The only area that’s not blooming is our grass. Because we take our dog out on a leash into the backyard several times a day, there is a well-worn bare patch where we walk. Also, because we live in such a rainy climate the path has turned into a muddy trail. We’re trying to figure out how to reseed the path while still being able to use the back yard for Sweetpea. Here she is the problem child… snooping on the neighbors!
It’s been a while since I’ve done a favourites edition! When I gave it some thought as to what I’ve been enjoying lately, the list was getting way too long. I’ve changed my diet around completely since the end of last year. I wrote a bit about it in this post (I’ll do an update soon), but, in the process of looking for new recipes I’m finding so many that are incredibly tasty that I’m calling all of them my favourites right now:) I also have some make up favourites.
So here goes! First I’ll go through the makeup I’m loving right now and using almost daily.
I saw someone use or talk about this Keyvn Aucoin palette in the fall. Marnie Goldberg from the YouTube channel, MsGoldGirl, loves the Celestial Powder and talks about it frequently. That’s where I first started hearing about it. I’ve heard about Kevyn Aucoin makeup for years, but, I’ve never owned any of it. I bought the palette because of the Celestial Powder in Candlelight, but, also because it has a contouring powder in it and I’ve been wanting to try some contouring!
The inside cover has a quick and handy tutorial on how to use all the different shades. I’ve found this helpful!
I have to say I love the highlighting powder. I’ve only owned a cream highlighting product once and didn’t care for it as much. This just lends a subtle glow to your face as long as you apply to the correct areas. I’ve used the contour also, which is called The Sculpting Powder in the palette and I really like it too. I still need to get more comfortable with contouring, but, I used it on New Year’s Eve and I like it! I wasn’t quite sure what to do with all the other powders until just recently I was watching another YouTuber, and I can’t remember who it was, but, she used the other shades for eyes. Well duh, the inside tutorial shows that. Since then I’ve used the Warm Brow and Dark Brow for my eyes as well as the Accentuate and Highlight almost daily. It’s a very natural look which I like and the Warm Brow colour has a hint of burgundy which makes my green eyes greener.
I also bought this tarte bronzer. I’ve been searching for another non-glittery bronzer since my last one was used up, ahem, borrowed by my daughter. It’s quite light and may not be darker enough in the summer, but, right now it’s perfect.
As you can see I’ve already put a dent in it!
I used to love Loreal Voluminous mascara, but, the last one I bought which I still have, was not the same! I found it so difficult to wash off. I don’t know if I bought a different formula or if the formula changed… because the packaging hadn’t. Anyway. I needed something else.
Five things that a nurse looks for in a mascara
- no flaking even after 12 hours of wear time
- no raccoon eyes after having a nap on your break
- washes off easily no extra cleanser needed when you’re too exhausted to even think about washing your face
- no irritation or stinging in eyes if you happen to shed some tears at work
- provides long and full lashes your lashes need to speak volumes when wearing a mask
I’m happy to say I found one that ticks all five boxes and it’s another Loreal product. I just happened to pick this one up because it was on sale at the drugstore. So far I’m loving the Voluminous Butterfly Intenza mascara!
Now to food!
I’ve made this sauce at least three or four times in the past month. It’s a vegan cauliflower sauce that mimics a cheesy, Bechamel sauce. I’ve used it for a macaroni casserole that my kids say is better tasting than the original one I used to make and I’ve made a vegan lasagna with it. If you don’t have a tasty alternative to a cheesy, dairy sauce yet, then, you have to give this one a try from The Veg Space! The Creamy Vegan Lasagna Sauce can be used in so many dishes and you’ll feel great eating it, because, it’s so much lighter on your waistline.
When I make this sauce I’ve added some dried mustard powder to it as well as garlic powder. I add dried mustard powder because years ago I heard if you add it to a cheese sauce or macaroni and cheese, it brings out the cheese flavour more intensely. The garlic powder I added just because I knew it add more flavour. Next time I may roast some garlic and add that to the sauce. On the website there are other suggestions of things to add for taste variety.
This macaroni casserole is so delicious. The way my mom makes it and how I used to make makaronilaatikko was to use lots of milk and eggs, but, now I can have the same comfort food but veganized.
There is never any leftovers when I make it! It’s gobbled up so fast.
This is my all time favourite for a while now! Toast with some Dijon mustard, avocados, and tomato slices. I like a real rustic loaf of bread with lots of whole grains. It’s my go to breakfast when I’m strapped for time.
I’m really happy with these new makeup products and I’m thrilled with this new sauce that I can use in a lot of different ways. If you’ve used any of the above products I’d love to hear your thoughts on them. Has anyone else made this amazing cauliflower sauce or do you have something similar you’d like to share?
The weekend is almost here and for most that means it’s a much-needed rest. I on the other hand am enjoying my days off mid-week and go back to work for the weekend. Oh joy!
Enjoy the rest of the week!
