The battle of the brow pencils, Anastasia Brow Wiz vs NYX Micro Brow Pencil, is on and I can tell you which one came out as the supreme winner right now… oh wait… you can read a little further first, right?
I got into “brows” very recently, maybe a year ago if that. Ridiculous I know, but, I’m a late bloomer! I’ve said this before and it’s true. I’ve watched my daughter grow up and become a beautiful young woman with a knack for hair and makeup. I’m learning from her in the sense that I see how she puts herself together. She doesn’t really give me time or teach me her tricks, but, that’s where YouTube comes in. This is a totally different era. I learned what I knew from Cosmopolitan and Glamour magazines growing up and that’s basically it! Now you can watch a gazillion beauty gurus on YouTube and learn from their tutorials… it’s nothing like it was for me when I was a teen.
Getting back to being a late bloomer. I loved makeup and bought what I could afford when I was young. I’d check out models in magazines and I’d try to copy their looks. But, I’ve never been one to wear it every day. Plus I was kind of silly about it. I’d do up my eyes really great and then wear nothing on my lips. I didn’t like gloss or lipstick. And as I said I never did a thing with my brows except to pluck them occasionally. One thing I never did was to over pluck my brows. Thank goodness! So, I’m saddened by the fact that now my brows are very sparse and rarely need to be plucked at all. Which leads me to my new obsession with my brows.
I’ve tried a few different ways to do my brows. My least favourite is powder. You can’t be very precise with it and I find it just sits on top of the hairs already there. I have eyebrow gel that I use with a brush when I’m going for more dramatic makeup (which happens once or twice a year, maybe) that I really like. But, for every day brows, I really like using an eye brow pencil. I’ve tried some drugstore pencils that didn’t work that well and it was mostly due to the colour not working out with my natural brow colour.
I tried the Anastasia Brow Wiz and fell in love with it. My daughter likes it too, but, said it was too expensive and she would go through it too fast. But, for me when I started doing my brows, it wasn’t an everyday thing, the Anastasia Brow Wiz pencil lasted for months. Now not so much, because I really like doing my brows every day. Even when I go to work in my scrubs I don’t feel right without my brows being done! What’s happened to me?
I’ve used NYX products and love some of them a lot. Then I heard that NYX had the Micro Brow Pencil that was in line with the Brow Wiz. I tried to buy it when I heard about it last year and it was sold out everywhere I looked. Finally I came across some and bought one pencil to try. I really liked it. I used it up and bought two more when NYX had a sale. I was curios as to how the NYX compared with the Anastasia pencil, so, last week I was in Sephora and I bought one to compare.
I’ve tried both pencils in the past few days and they both do a really good job. I thought the NYX pencil was slightly warmer in tone when on my brows. The other day I wanted to see if this was really the case so I did one brow in the NYX and the other in the Anastasia pencil. I couldn’t see the difference. As the day wore on I forgot which was done with which pencil and I couldn’t tell the difference.
Both pencils are in the colour taupe. Both have great spoolies on the end of the pencils. I do feel like the Anastasia Brow Wiz was slightly easier to draw with, as if the point was smoother, but, it was a very slight difference. The NYX Micro Brow Pencil weight is 0.09g and the Anastasia Brow Wiz is 0.085g. What isn’t slight is the price difference! The Anastasia Brow Wiz at Sephora is $27.00 CAD and after taxes it was just over $30.00. The NYX pencil at the drugstore is $12.99 CAD. If on sale they are even cheaper. That’s a huge difference!
So, I’m going to stick with the NYX Micro Brow Pencil. It’s half the price of the Anastasia Brow Wiz and does the same job. My brows can now breathe a sigh of relief, because, when the next sale is on… I’m stocking up on these babies. Just to prove my point, my daughter, I’ve noticed has been into my stash of NYX Micro Brow Pencils, which to me means they are as great as I think they are 🙂
Is there a certain product you can’t do without?
Have a great weekend!
