My sister and I went to Courtenay on Vancouver Island a week ago and I ran into the same dilemma I always do when traveling, finding vegan restaurants. I can always eat if there is a good grocery store around, I’m not worried about that. It’s just when you’re on a road trip you sometime just want to sit in a restaurant or even get some food to go. It’s not always fun to be the one person at the table eating the house salad.
The trip to the island was to visit my mom which my sister and I have been trying to do every other month for a while now, especially, since my mom’s Alzheimer’s has progressed. We like to hang out with her at her place and we usually order food in. Sometime we take her out for lunch or dinner. It depends on how much time we have with her. But, the same issue comes up every time I’m on the road… finding ready-made plant-based food.
Courtenay does have one vegan restaurant called Rawthentic Eatery, so, I really shouldn’t complain! Because that’s one more than most towns. I’ve eaten there three times now and each time the food has been really good. This visit we ordered dinner from an Indian restaurant, which was tasty but over-priced, and I managed to get some veggie dishes. Oh happy me! The next afternoon when we were leaving I was starving again. I didn’t want to have another piece of toast or a piece of fruit. I was craving something savoury and I got just that at Rawthentic. Thank goodness. My sister can attest to the fact that I was getting hangry! I ordered a wrap made out of raw grains and filled with an abundance of veggies and a super flavourful dressing. I felt healthier as I was eating 🙂
I’m just curious why in this day and age of clean eating, healthy eating, plant-based, veganism there aren’t more cafes and restaurants catering to people that want to eat only plant-based food? I know enough people in my little circle of friends and relatives to make me think it would be worthwhile for business to start tapping into this market.
A friend at work recommended the Happy Cow app to me a while back. I’m pretty sure I checked into it at that time and I’m not sure why I didn’t download it then. Well I finally did. I did a search in my area for vegan restaurants and I have to say it turned out pretty dismal as I knew it would! But, I wanted to check in case I was missing some super, awesome place! So, unless there’s going to be an explosion of vegan offerings at restaurants this app will be useless to me! Okay, that may be an exaggeration, because I’m sure it will be helpful when I travel and go on road trips with my hubby on the bike, because, it is supposed to be world-wide. But, come on restaurants in my little corner of the world, please, starting offering vegan options!
What do you vegans and plant eaters do when traveling or road-tripping to not starve or feel left out?
Have a wonderful healthy week!
