The pre-holiday before the holiday has turned out to be a rain out! A few months back our friends asked us if we were interested in going to Keremeos in the Similkameen Valley for a Barbeque King Competition and wine tasting event. Comments were made that I’d probably have to drink my tickets worth of wine instead of the eating the actual barbeque since I don’t eat meat and so on. But, I read up on the event and it looks like the chefs will be using all kinds of local ingredients, so, I’m sure I’ll have something delicious to eat. Right now it’s early in the morning the day of the event, so, it will be interesting to see how this day unfolds… so far it’s been an adventure.
My husband and his friend decided to take their motorcycles even though the weather forecast showed a very good chance of rain. Well they made it to Keremeos without getting too wet and they said the ride wasn’t bad which was good. But, my friend and I drove through torrential downpours. Before we reached our destination, which was this cute little B&B in the middle of a vineyard on airbnb, we got a call from the husbands…
The weekend is over and here is what happened
…apparently the B&B that my friends had booked long in advance, the one that he had a reservation number for, the one that he had confirmed only that morning by speaking with the owner… was double booked! Lets just say our weekend to the barbeque slash wine tasting event turned into a real comedy of errors. Basically we met up with the guys at the local bar in Keremeos and spent a significant amount of time looking for other accommodations. The owner of the bar told us that she hadn’t heard good things about the motel that the B&B owner was trying to arrange for us. She used words like bedbugs! The town is small. I mean tiny!
We ended up in Penticton which is a thirty minute drive away and we were able to arrange a shuttle that got us to the event and back to our hotel room in Penticton. We could only get one night at this hotel. Penticton was all booked up, because, not only was it a summer weekend, but, the Penticton Granfondo was taking place. We had limited options, but, we eventually found a place for our second night. When you see the bathroom you’ll have an idea what we were up against 🙂 It was clean. What more can you ask for!
We spent way too much time looking for alternative accommodations instead of taking it easy and enjoying ourselves. But, we did manage to have fun eventually. Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate with the event though. We got to the barbeque and were totally rained out. I mean we got soaked! Then the rain stopped and we dried off enough to enjoy the food and wine. It’s too bad because the location was incredible!
We stopped and bought some fruit on the way home and the weather cooperated… finally. I know one day we will be looking back at this weekend and laughing, because, it was such a mess until the end. I’m happy I was in a vehicle and not on the back of the bike, so, I could at least bring some delicious fruit home. Keith goes riding through the Similkameen Valley all the time because it’s so beautiful. I’d definitely want to try this Barbeque King event again with preferably better weather, because, the location was so beautiful with all the surrounding winery’s. Maybe next year 🙂
This was the precursor to our real holiday which starts this coming weekend and this time I will be on a motorcycle. We are flying to Orlando and doing a motorcycle tour with stops in places like Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina. I’m getting excited and a bit nervous because I’m still packing! I’ll post bit’s of my travel on snapchat as I can, so, follow me there if you have the app.
How is your summer going so far? Do you have any interesting travel plans?
