I recently watched a movie on Netflix that I have to tell you about. This movie among others I’ve watched has made me realize that I can’t feed my family food that may harm them any longer. The movie I’m talking about is What the Health. The same guys that filmed Cowspiracy made this very informative movie. I’ve talked about eating plant-based whole foods for a while now. In the last several months eating plant-based whole food has become more ingrained in me. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve lost my appetite for meat, or, I’m learning how healing food can be!
As of this moment my daughter, who is twenty years old is a vegan. She’s been vegan for approximately a year and a half with her boyfriend. They have truly adopted the vegan life-style. I don’t refer to myself as being vegan though, but, I’m a plant-based whole food eater… that’s a mouthful! I also believe in not harming animals and treating them kindly. I’m all for that, but, I also believe there is a hierarchy in the circle of life and man is at the top of this circle. I’m not going to go into detail about my use of leather products and such, because I still have many. I don’t believe throwing away and discarding perfectly useable items is responsible at all for the environment. But, since changing my eating habits I do make more careful decisions about what I buy or as in the case of the past few months, not buy, as you can read about here.
Back to the movie. I paid $16.94 CAD to download the movie. Well worth the money! When you watch it you’ll see how incredibly corrupt and unreliable trusted resources can be. It’s actually mind-blowing and drives home the message that I have to be in charge of my health! I already know first hand, after being a registered nurse for over twenty years, that doctors are great at what they are specifically trained to do, but, don’t count on them knowing the latest about what’s best for your overall health! Even nurses get a very tiny amount of education on nutrition and physical fitness in school. In the medical profession, in general, it’s all about treating the symptoms. Hospitals and doctors offices are a businesses. In Canada we aren’t quite as business orientated as the USA, but, it’s coming. I see it at work all the time. When you watch the movie you’ll see this and it’s disgusting!
I’ve been making dinners all plant-based whole food for over a year now, but, to satisfy my son’s and husband I’ve cooked chicken, beef, or fish on the side. I’ve been buying eggs and dairy products for them because that’s what they want. Since watching this movie I’ve told my husband I don’t want to do this anymore. I want him to stay healthy and fit for a long time. He’s super fit and super healthy, so, that’s how I’d like to keep him. The amount of diabetes and prostate cancer I see when triaging is tragic. Whatever I can do to help prevent this I’d like to try doing.
I know I sound like a fanatic, but, that’s okay with me. I also haven’t been super strict with this yet, but, I’ve warned them and they now know how important it is for me that they stop eating meat and dairy. I’m not sure how it will go just yet. Keith is great with eating all plant-based whole food, but, he craves meat and dairy still. Hopefully over time these cravings will lessen.
It’s really powerful to know that even if you have the gene for a disease, your lifestyle choices, may change the course of your life. As they said in the film one or two cancer cells won’t kill you, but, millions will! When people say they are skeptical about this, just think about how difficult it is for people to lose weight. This is a hard lifestyle choice for many. They would rather take a pill or two or three (and triple that amount) rather than totally change their eating habits in the case of diabetes or heart disease. I have family who suffer with diabetes and heart disease. I have family with Alzheimer’s Disease. Not one of them changed their eating habits drastically enough. They take medication and have surgery instead. The reason is because they didn’t know (the ones that have died) or they don’t know (the ones that are still alive and suffering) and some don’t believe food can make a difference. It’s very sad.
If you watch the film let me know what you think?
