I did a three-day juice cleanse last month after watching the film Fat Sick and Nearly Dead. Yes, another film that I found incredibly interesting to watch! I first heard about this film from a YouTuber I watch missmai27… she’s Finnish. She did a longer juice cleanse, I think it was at least two weeks. I followed along as she vlogged about it and realized I needed something to kick my ass in gear. So, I decided to try it! The plan set up on the Reboot with Joe website is easy to follow and free to download. A daily menu of juices is planned out for you when you download the free program. Why did I do a three-day juice cleanse? I did the three-day juice cleanse because I wanted to find out if this would help some intestinal issues I’ve been having. Nothing major, but, nonetheless uncomfortable for me. My issues are mainly with bloating after eating and sometimes feeling sluggish like I’m not getting enough greens in my diet. I did the three-day juice cleanse and I’m so glad I did it!
I’m not new to fasting though. My mom was so far ahead of her time in the natural health movement! Thank goodness! I’m sure it helped keep Alzheimer’s at bay longer for her, unlike with her sisters. One of the things she did when she was younger was fast. For as long as I can remember she has fasted. I’ve also fasted occasionally throughout the years. My reasons for fasting were mainly superficial ones. Mostly to lose a few pounds quickly and to get rid of some bloating before a special occasion. I have and always have had a very good appetite, too good sometimes. I’ve never dieted per se. So fasting was always part of my life when I felt I had over done it a bit. And now can you believe it’s actually a thing! What do they call it… intermittent fasting?
We’ve had a juicer for years. Keith had wanted one for his birthday. So as it happens we had the Breville juicer that’s used in the film. It does the job. I don’t know any different as it’s the only juicer I’ve owned. Keith would occasionally make some juice for us and he was lucky if he could squeeze out one cup of juice from all the veggies he put through the machine! So, I was really wondering how I was going to survive and not feel like I was starving doing this three-day juice cleanse. I have a pretty big appetite!
The instructions for the three-day juice cleanse include a daily juice plan and it amounts to having five juices a day. The recipes for the juices are categorized by colour depending on the predominant vegetable or fruit in the juice. The juice plan basically tells you which colour of juice to drink throughout the day. This is helpful so that you are actually consuming the colours of the rainbow in fruit and vegetables which is what you want to do. What I found surprising is the amount of juice I made each time! None of this measly little cupful that Keith was able to juice! I was making a litre at a time! The first juice I made I thought the litre serving was what I was supposed to drink in one sitting. I could barely do it even though it was super tasty. Turns out one serving is half that amount!
I did spend a lot of time at the local produce store. I was bringing home bagfuls of produce and so much kale that I cleaned them out a few times. You really have to be prepared for the huge quantities you need. I didn’t have room in my fridge for three days worth, so, I shopped daily. This is the premise of juice fasting. It would be nearly impossible to eat the amount of vegetables and fruit that I was able to juice and drink. It’s beneficial in the fact it loads your system with vitamins and minerals galore! The Reboot with Joe website provides this explanation:
Making fresh juice a part of a well-balanced, plant-based diet is an important tool for achieving good health.
- Calorie reduction without nutrient deprivation
- Promotion of healthy eating habits
- Delicious way to consume fresh produce
- Floods the body with micronutrients
I brought my juice to work with me. I brought some juice for my friend to try out. She liked it! But, she also is a beet lover like me! There were various juice recipes and some I liked more than others. So, I stuck to the ones I really liked in all the colour categories. I’ll do it again. I was even toying with the idea of juicing for a week to ten days. I’ll see how I feel when I’m ready for another reboot of my system.
My bloating was gone. Plus I was happily surprised I didn’t need all that much cleansing (wink, wink), and I felt really good after the initial fourteen hours of headache… which was due to the lack of my two cups of coffee when I wake up. I also lost a few pounds. I felt generally well. Yes, I’d definitely recommend this to anyone else that needs to get their eating habits in order or any one who suffers with intestinal issues.
